If you are attending a property viewing in Germany, you’ll be asked to complete a tenant self-disclosure form (Mieter-Selbstauskunft) usually before your appointment.
What is this form?
The self-disclosure form is a standard part of the German rental process. It collects basic personal and financial information, such as:
Your contact details
Employment and income information
Current landlord details
Simple declarations about your rental history (e.g. arrears, insolvency, or evictions)
Landlords in Germany use this information to assess whether you may be a suitable tenant.
Why do I need to complete it?
It’s expected in Germany: Most landlords require it before or during viewings.
Fair process: All applicants provide the same details, so everyone is treated equally.
Efficiency: Completing it early helps speed up the rental process if you move forward.
If you’re viewing a property in another country, you do not need to fill out this form.
What happens to my data?
We take data protection very seriously:
Your details are only used for your rental application in Germany.
If no rental contract is signed, your data is securely deleted in accordance with German data protection law (BDSG/GDPR).
We never share your information with third parties except where legally required.
How long does it take?
Filling out the form takes just 5–10 minutes.
